Prof. Anindya Datta

Director

On 4th December 2025, I assumed charge as Director of the Institute of Nano Science and Technology (INST), Mohali. I bring with me an academic and research career spanning over two decades, and I am currently on lien from the Department of Chemistry at IIT Bombay, where I have served as Professor since 2012. My academic journey began in Kolkata, where I completed my B.Sc. at Presidency College, followed by an M.Sc. at the University of Calcutta, and a Ph.D. at the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS). My doctoral training laid the foundation for a career deeply rooted in fundamental chemistry, while also embracing interdisciplinary applications. After my Ph.D., I pursued a postdoctoral fellowship at Iowa State University, which provided valuable international exposure. On returning to India, I worked as a Scientific Officer in the Biomedical Application Section at the Centre for Advanced Technology (CAT), Indore, contributing to research at the intersection of chemistry and biomedical sciences. In 2002, I joined IIT Bombay as an Assistant Professor, was promoted to Associate Professor in 2007, and became Professor in 2012. Over the years, I have had the privilege of mentoring numerous students, leading pioneering research initiatives, and contributing to the academic growth of the department. My work reflects a commitment to advancing chemistry while fostering innovation and translational impact. As Director of INST, my vision is to strengthen interdisciplinary collaborations, nurture young talent, and position the institute as a hub for cutting-edge research in nanoscience and technology. I aspire to bridge fundamental science with societal needs, driving progress in healthcare, energy, environment, and beyond.

  • Prof. Anindya Datta’s research interests center on the photophysics of fluorescent molecules and nanomaterials, with applications in biomedicine, sensing, artificial photosynthesis, and photovoltaics. His work explores excited‑state dynamics in porphyrins, benzimidazoles, aminoquinolines, and Schiff bases; fluorescence‑based probes for microenvironments and metal ion detection; ultrafast processes in silica nanostructures and dye–silica nanoconjugates for light harvesting; and transient spectroscopy of quantum dots, perovskites, and conjugated polymers to advance solar energy conversion.

  • Our group is involved in the study of ultrafast dynamics and its applications in chemistry and biology. Specific areas in which we work and are interested in working are:

    Excited state dynamics of novel fluorophores
    Time resolved spectroscopic investigation of microheterogeneous media
    Ultrafast molecular devices
    Luminescenct nanostructures
    Fluorescence sensing of biophysically relevant analytes
