Prof. Anindya Datta

Prof. Anindya Datta assumed charge as Director of the Institute of Nano Science and Technology (INST), Mohali on 4th December 2025, bringing with him a distinguished academic and research career that spans over two decades. He is on lien from the Department of Chemistry at IIT Bombay, where he has served as Professor since 2012.
Prof. Datta’s academic journey began in Kolkata, where he completed his B.Sc. at Presidency College, followed by an M.Sc. at the University of Calcutta, and a Ph.D. at the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS). His doctoral training laid the foundation for a career deeply rooted in fundamental chemistry, while also embracing interdisciplinary applications.
Following his Ph.D., he pursued a postdoctoral fellowship at Iowa State University, gaining valuable international exposure. On returning to India, he worked as a Scientific Officer in the Biomedical Application Section at the Centre for Advanced Technology (CAT), Indore, where he contributed to research at the intersection of chemistry and biomedical sciences.
In 2002, Prof. Datta joined IIT Bombay as an Assistant Professor, rising to Associate Professor in 2007 and Professor in 2012. Over the years, he has mentored numerous students, led pioneering research initiatives, and contributed significantly to the academic growth of the department. His work reflects a commitment to advancing chemistry while fostering innovation and translational impact.
As Director of INST, Prof. Datta envisions strengthening interdisciplinary collaborations, nurturing young talent, and positioning the institute as a hub for cutting-edge research in nanoscience and technology. His leadership is expected to further bridge fundamental science with societal needs, driving progress in healthcare, energy, environment, and beyond.
