Prof. Indranil Sarkar
Professor (Scientist-F) & Dean Academics
We are an experimental physics group working towards understanding and developing quantum materials and spintronic platforms. Spintronics is a field of research that involves the spin degree of freedom for electronic applications. The group is involved in developing nanostructured thin films and heterostructures of quantum materials like spin valve structures and topological heterostructures and understanding their electronic, magnetic, and magnetization dynamics properties. We explore the physics of the novel quantum phenomenon at the interfaces of the heterostructures.

Dr. Indranil Sarkar's group has developed a novel method based on the electrodeposition technique to realize highly crystalline thin films of high spin polarization Heusler compounds that are thermodynamically difficult to achieve using the conventional physical vapor deposition method. This novel class of spintronic materials shows a high degree of magneto-optical response comparable to conventional magnetic alloys. This opens up a great opportunity to realize new classes of spintronic platforms.

Dr. Indranil Sarkar's group has developed highly ordered crystalline Heusler nanoparticles and demonstrated the heat generation capability of these nanostructures under the application of alternating magnetic fields. This work presents the possibility of using Heusler nanoparticles as a new w material class for magnet-thermal applications. Through these studies, a new physical structure parameter has been developed that can be used to efficiently control the size, chemical, and crystalline order for designing Heusler nanoparticles.

Heterostructures comprising bilayers of FM and heavy metal HM are of immense significance in spintronics as they allow the realization of various useful phenomena related to the conversion of spin current to charge current. Dr. Indranil Sarkar's group is developing ferromagnet (FM)/ Heavy non-magnetic metal (HM) bilayers for the creation of novel spintronic applications that can act as efficient spin-pumping platforms. Novel strategies and intrinsic understanding to enhance spin pumping in these heterostructures are being developed. A magnetization dynamics lab has been developed for these studies.
